Scandi interior design ideas for UK homes.

Scandinavian style is about light. Pale walls, pale wood, and rooms arranged so that daylight travels as far as it can. It's the most forgiving style for a first flat, because almost everything in it is inexpensive and easy to find.

How to get the look

Keep the walls white but warm, never blue-white. Ash and birch furniture, simple shapes, and one piece of colour in a rug or an armchair. Scandi rooms fail when they're bare, so add texture: a sheepskin, a wool throw, a woven basket. Plants do a lot here, and so does a single good pendant over the table.

Materials that carry it

If you only do one thing

The lighting. Swap the single ceiling light for a pendant plus a floor lamp, on warm bulbs. Scandi rooms are built on soft light, and without it the pale palette goes flat.

Common questions

Is Scandi style dated?

The pale, bare version is. The current version is warmer and more textured, closer to what we call warm modern. Either way, light wood and simple shapes are not going anywhere.

What flooring suits a Scandi room?

Pale wood or a light wood-effect floor, with a large wool rug. If you have dark floorboards, a big pale rug does most of the same job.

Which colours go with Scandi?

Warm white walls, then one accent: dusty blue, sage, or a muted terracotta. Keep it to one.
