Luxe interior design ideas for UK homes.

Luxe is depth and richness: dark painted walls, velvet, marble, brass, and low warm light. It's the style for a room you use in the evening, and it makes a small room feel intentional rather than cramped.

How to get the look

Commit to the walls. A deep green, navy or aubergine, painted to the ceiling and over the woodwork, is what makes luxe work; a dark feature wall alone looks unfinished. Then contrast: a velvet sofa in a jewel tone, brass lighting, a marble or dark wood table, a mirror to bounce the light. Keep the number of objects low and the quality high. Lighting should be layered and dimmable.

Materials that carry it

If you only do one thing

The paint. Luxe is made by the walls, and a deep colour over walls, woodwork and ceiling is the cheapest transformation on this page. Do it before buying a single piece of furniture.

Common questions

Will dark walls make my room feel small?

Painted wall to ceiling, no. Dark rooms lose their edges, which makes them feel deeper. A dark feature wall with white elsewhere is what makes a room feel small.

Which colours are luxe?

Deep greens, navy, aubergine, and warm ochre or rust in the fabrics. Brass rather than chrome in the metalwork.

Can luxe be done cheaply?

Paint is cheap and does most of it. Add one velvet piece and brass lighting, and the rest can be plain.
