Can you design a room from a photo?

Yes, if the photo shows the whole room. Here is exactly what happens between sending a picture of your living room and getting back a plan for it, and what to photograph so the plan is right first time.

What the photo needs to show

As much of the room as possible in one frame. Stand in a corner or the doorway, hold the phone at chest height and landscape, and use the normal lens rather than the wide one: the wide lens gets more in but stretches the room, and the plan is only as accurate as the proportions in the photo. Daylight with the lights off is best; flash flattens everything. Don't tidy for it. The clutter tells us how the room is actually used, which is more useful than a staged shot.

A second photo from the opposite corner helps if there is an alcove, a bay or a fireplace the first one misses. That is all. Floor plans and measurements are welcome but not needed.

What we do with it

You tell us what you like, what has to stay, who uses the room and what you want to spend. We design the room around that: a photo-real picture of your actual room, same window, same floor, same proportions, with the new scheme in place. Then the paint colours by name, every piece of furniture and lighting chosen for that room and linked to a UK shop at its real price, three budgets to choose between, and the order to do it in so the expensive things go in last. It arrives by email in days.

What a photo can't tell us

If you only do one thing

Take the photo from the doorway, wide, in daylight. Nine out of ten problems with a plan trace back to a photo that showed half the room.

Common questions

Does the picture look like my room or a generic one?

Your room. The window, floor, ceiling height and shape are kept exactly; only the decoration and furniture change. You can see one next to the original at renderhomes.co.uk/example.

Can I keep my existing furniture?

Yes. Tell us what stays and the plan is built around it. Most rooms keep the sofa or the bed and change everything around them.

Do I have to buy everything on the list?

No. The list is there so you can. The three budgets and the order of work are designed so you can do it in stages over months.

How much does a plan from a photo cost?

£150 for one room, charged only when the plan arrives, with one revision included and a full refund within 14 days if it isn't right.
